ENDOSCOPIC RETROGRADE CHOLANGIOPANCREATOGRAPHY Home>>Procedures>>ERCP

ERCP

ERCP: An important procedure for bile and pancreas related problems

What is ERCP?

ERCP is a special type of endoscopy procedure that doctors use to detect and treat diseases of  the bile ducts and pancreas ducts. Full name of ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde  Cholangiopancreatography)  How does ERCP work?  ERCP uses a long, flexible tube with a camera attached at the end. This tube is inserted into the  digestive system through the patient's mouth. This allows the doctor to use radiography (X-rays)  to view and assess the structure of the bile and pancreas and diagnose any blockage or  abnormality.

 Why is ERCP done?

There can be many reasons for doing ERCP such as-

  •  Blockage of bile ducts: This is usually done to detect stones or tumors.
  •  Gallbladder problems: such as inflammation of the gallbladder.
  •  Pancreatic problems: such as pancreatic cancer.
  •  Narrowing or lesions in the bile ducts: To detect infection or lesions after surgery.  Benefits of ERCP  • Accurate information and treatment of diseases.
  •  Clearing blockage in the bile or pancreatic ducts.
  •  This facilitates the removal of tumors or stones.
  •  The procedure for placing stents in the tubes is also done.

 What happens during the procedure?

  •  Before the procedure, the patient is first given anesthesia.
  • The endoscope is inserted through the mouth and slowly passed into the digestive tract.
  • The doctor looks at the tubes through an X-ray using contrast dye
  • If needed, procedures are performed to remove the blockage or stone, or to insert a stent.

Risks and Care

ERCP is generally a safe diagnostic procedure but sometimes it may carry some risks such as  infection, bleeding, injury to the digestive system, pancreatitis.  After the test, the patient is advised to rest and eat light food. If any unusual symptoms like  fever, stomach pain, or vomiting occur, immediately consult a doctor or contact a doctor.

 conclusion

ERCP is an effective and useful procedure which helps in diagnosing and treating problems  related to gall bladder and pancreas. If you have any problem related to these organs then  contact the doctor for timely and right treatment.
